Conversation with Jacques Rancière on Poetry – The Role of the Poet in the World of Emancipation and EqualityEdition Yugoslavia organized a conversation on poetry and its role in the society of emancipation and equality, between Jacques Rancière, a French philosopher, and the group of poets gathered around samizdat edition Caché – Tamara Šuškić, Uroš Kotlajić, Bojan Vasić, Goran Korunović and Vladimir Tabašević. The event took place at the University Library "Svetozar Markovic" in Belgrade, Serbia on May 10 2014.Ivana Momčilović, Vesna Bjedov and Đorđe Balzamović (from Edition Yugoslavia), Biljana Andonovska (a surrealism researcher), Miklavž Komelj (a Slovenian poet and an art historian, who sent the questions beforehand) and Danielle Rancière (a philosopher) also participated in the conversation.
Professor Aleksandar Jerkov and Srbislava Šahović from the University Library were also present.
The problems of contemporary poetry mainly were not the subject of Rancière’s interest until now. Rancière met the group of contemporary poets for the first time and discussed poetry with them. Edition Yugoslavia, in collaboration with Edition Caché, is going to publish a bilingual book based on this conversation. Rancière was born in Algeria in 1940. He graduated from École Normale Supérieure in Paris and he came to prominence when he co-authored Reading Capital (1968) with the structural Marxist philosopher Louis Althusser with whom he broke over during the students’ revolution in 1968. At the invitation of Michel Foucault he went to the new experimental University of Vincennes which was moved to the Parisian suburbia St. Denis (Paris- VIII) where he worked until re retired in 1920’s.
Jacques Rancière is currently on the second Yugoslav tour called “Politics of Time”. He held a lecture called “Time, Narration, Politics” in Skopje on May 6 2014 and he also held a lecture called “New Overview of Modernity” in Novi Sad on May 8 2014. His visit was organized by Edicija Jugoslavija, Institute of Social Sciences and Humanities Skopje and Student Cultural Centre of Novi Sad.
Possible overlaps of different approaches to poetry present in practices of this poetry group and in Rancière’s articulation of political and aesthetic questions will be described in more detail on the website of Edicija Jugoslavija. Edicija Jugoslavija gives precedence
to the authors who managed to differentiate between the glow of the dead star
and the true blaze even when everything indicated the opposite. It is dedicated
to the thinkers of equality and emancipation, Yugoslav surrealists and poets,
thinkers on their trail.
It was the
first one to publish The Method of Equality: Politics and Poetics, a book
consisting of three texts, and Has the Time of Emancipation Passed are
the transcripts of Rancière’s lectures held in Belgrade, Zagreb and
Ljubljana in 2010. The “Lecture” or Rancière’s uncategorized style is the text
written by the editorial board of Edicija Jugoslavija. Tamara Šuškić (1981) Published collections: Slika jedne slagalice (2001), Private Show (2005), Road and Family (caché 2012). She co-authors with Ana Seferović and Tanja Marković plays Diskretne žene, dekorativno dete, danska doga (2008) and Plovidba (2009).

She translates contemporary Macedonian literature and writes literary criticism.
